How do I update my Facebook "Instant Personalization" settings?
Facebook has recently updated their site to allow integration with other 3rd party websites, like CNN, USA Today, Yelp, and many others. By adding the famous "Like" button across the web, Facebook allows a user to link any piece of content to their wall which is then shared with all your friends!
On the other hand, what Facebook doesn't tell you is that they changed your privacy settings.
This new feature called "Instant Personalization" allows other websites to access your information to personalize your experience. Also, these sites connect with your friends so a user can track what their friends are interested in. This wouldn't be such a problem if Facebook told you exactly what you were doing, but they assume that users want other websites to access their information without their knowledge. To change this, follow the directions below.
1) Click on "Account" and under the drop down menu click "Privacy Settings"
2) Under Privacy Settings click "Applications and Websites"
3) In Applications and Websites click "Instant Personalization" at the bottom.
4) In Instant Personalization, make sure you read the features carefully to understand if this is something you would be interested in. If not, deselect the bottom button labeled "Allow select partners..." As you will see, Facebook has already decided to select this for you.
And you're done! You have now protected more of your information from being accessed.
