Flickr Social Marketing list for Metropolitan Area Children's Museums

""This is a help file for Children's Museums in metropolitan areas that lists how to get started on Flickr. If you can read between the examples most of this can be used for any organization that has a need for a presence on Flickr.

  1. Complete Profile   ""
    Complete your profile on Flickr and add your logo to as the icon – edit your profile page to do this. http://www.flickr.com/people/yourflickrname/

  2. Add images of Exhibits categorized by sets ""
    1. Tag and title all image with good key words
    2. EX of image tags:
      • Children’s Museum of Houston
      • Children’s Museum Exhibits
      • Museum Exhibits
      • Houston Area Kids
      • Houston Attractions
      • “Name of the exhibit”
      • Houston, TX
      • Etc.
      • The more *relevant tags the better
    3. Note – you can use these tags on every set. They are general enough to relate.
    4. Add descriptions if possible to each image to help tell the story and further engage
    5. Add a good title to each image
  1. Add images of the building architecture for the Museum in it’s own set   ""

  2. Search for Groups that you may want to add your photos to: http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q

  3. Join Groups of relevancy

    ""

    1. Join Groups of relevancy and submit photos of group relevancy to those groups every time you add an new image
    2. This will increase traffic and build brand awareness

  4. Find groups members with relevant interest 
    1. comment on their photos that you like to build a relationship connection
    2. add them as a contact if you like their photos
  5. Add a Contacts   ""
    1. Get Busy with the Add a Contact Button
    2. Add them and they will most likely add you

  6. Keep your images fresh
    1. Post at least 2x a week
    2. Comment on others when posting new images
    3. Submit images to groups and tag them every time

  7. Create Groups

    1. Create Groups that will interest and promote/create fans of your brand within Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/groups_create.gne

  9. Example of Group Promotion:
    1. This blog post about the Georgia Aquarium’s Flickr group might be interesting to you: http://hyku.com/blog/archives/001746.html   essentially the aquarium wanted to do something fun for the Web site re-launch and decided to use peoples’ photos and stories from Flickr.  The aquarium pro-actively reached out to Flickr users and allowed them to each upload 5 photos total, to encourage visitors to send only their very best.

      What they do from there is still unknown, but the blog post (written by Josh Hallet –) gives a few ideas that could be relevant to the you:

    2. Host private function for photo group members and invite a professional photographer to host an instructional seminar (with free access to the grounds to take further photos with no other visitors around)
    3. Allow photo group contributors access to behind the scenes areas for photo shoots
    4. Feature selected photos from group on Web site homepage
    5. Take the 12 best shots and use them in a calendar (perhaps after a public vote)

  10. Add Flickr profile link to your site
    1. Add your Flickr badge to your site. You can get the badge from your Flickr page. This is code they give you.
    2. Add Facebook profile links to your site, your blog and any other area you present yourself online.
    3. When profiles are healthy send out a newsletter to announcement your engagement. Watch the network grow…
    4. Send newsletter from the site to promote groups and contest etc.
