Online Communities - Friend Or Foe? Discussion At Hoby Leadership Conference
With the emergence and use of the internet, on line communities have grown in leaps and bounds. From Yahoo, MSN, GOOGLE and other “group” services one can connect to others around the globe for support, advice and guidance.
As of late, two on line communities have exploded in popularity, MySpace.com and Facebook.com. Community members are able to connect by interests, share files, stories, and even find a date. With the growth of this online social interaction, key questions must be answered:
Do on line communities provide a service that is needed in today’s society for relationship building?
Are on line communities such as MySpace.com and Facebook.com safe for users?
What are do's and don’ts for becoming a member of an on line community?
At this panel discussion, HOBY Leadership Conference student participants will have a chance to voice their own questions, ideas and concerns surrounding the explosion of these online tools.

Speaker: Katie Laird
Communications Coordinator
Schipul - The Web Marketing Company
Katie Laird is a self-admitted Internet geek with an obsession for figuring out how computers help people play and interact. No site too small, no social software too obscure.
Luckily for her, Katie works for Schipul - The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com) as Communications Coordinator where it all revolves around hooking up cool people with software (www.tendenci.com) and Web sites that make the world a better place.
When not working on her online projects or writing for the Houston Metblog (http://houston.metblogs.com), she can be found hunting for urban art, annoying used book store employees, playing WOW and cramming for tests at the University of Houston.
