Overview
The Children's Museum of Houston has been a staple of the Houston community for years and has grown into one of the nation's top children's museums. As the museum's goals and activities grew, a website was needed to handle those increased efforts. Besides showcasing the big, fun feel of the museum, the site also requires the functionality to display information on its 14+ exhibits, promote special events, highlight current programs, process online payment transactions, and collect member information.
Execution
The new Children's Museum of Houston site was dynamically built to be fresh and reflective of the museum's constantly new and evolving activities. The implementation of multiple rotating "Stories Modules" provided an outlet for highlighting exhibits, events, and membership benefits. Dynamic content pulling from photo galleries, social media accounts, video streams, and blog content provide an everchanging website while still keeping the staff maintenence manageable.
User interaction was also a driving force behind decisions made for the Children's Museum site. By looking at Google Analytics, we were able to determine some of the information users were often looking for. It may not be as fun as exhibits and photos, but hugely important! Information such as hours, directions, pricing, daily activities and contact information were incorporated into the design along with a mobile version of the site. Key pages were translated into Spanish as well.
Other elements incorporated specifically for the Children's Museum of Houston's needs:
- Custom membership application.
- Special membership forms to be used during promotions, often tied to Facebook pages.
- User groups for communicating to specific segments of members.
- Reporting of online membership revenue.
- Social Media integration, including a WordPress video blog for Mr. O, the Children Museum's resident science guru
